Help...I'm Having Difficulty with Colossians 1:23!

I am having a little difficulty with Colossians 1:23 and wondered if you have commented on it anywhere that I can access. It's the 'if' word that throws me a bit which seems somewhat out of context?

You know that exact same word threw me also and also the sentence before about being enemies in our minds because of behavior. Here is what I wrote about it: The Hope Held Out In The Gospel—Colossians 1:21-23. As you read, think of this idea as being a work of faith not a work not necessarily a condition of salvation.
