A Lesson from the Law (Hebrews 2:2-3)

A Lesson from the Law (Hebrews 2:2-3)

"For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him" (Hebrews 2:2-3)

Part 2 of 2

"Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?" (Hebrews 10:28-29)

When the law was given, it was put into effect and ratified by the angels (Acts 7:38; Acts 7:53; Galatians 3:19; Hebrews 2:1). It proved authentic and every act of disobedience against it was judged and received swift punishment. In fact one of the first offenses after the law was given was a man who was stoned to death because he was picking up sticks on the Sabbath Day, which was forbidden (Numbers 15:32-36). This went against the Law and He received the punishment of the Law, death. This is an extreme example but the point I am making is that the Law, which was put in place by angels, carried weight with God. So that each violation and disobedience received the prescribed punishment, how much more do you think you will be punished if you reject Jesus, the sole expression of God's glory? Hebrews reminds us, "It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:31).

This is why God sends the Holy Spirit to confirm with our spirit the gospel message. He doesn't want us to miss it! He wants us to accept Jesus, to accept his forgiveness, to accept his payment for our sins, and to accept His invitation to live eternally with Him. He loves us and did everything it took to bring us into relationship with Him, but he still gives us the choice. He has made our options very clear, Jesus is the only way, we can choose Him and live, or we can reject Him and suffer the result of that decision.

This verse is a powerful reminder of this choice, "For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:2-3a). Jesus is the only way to the Father. His gift of grace is free. And the offer is open to everyone. The gospel message is brilliant and I pray that you understand it and trust in Jesus to save you; looking forward to a time when we will all celebrate together in heaven praising the Son who gave up everything to unite us.

Tomorrow we look at Hebrews 2:4; Jesus; Endorsed by God, Approved by Signs and Wonders
