Romans 5:15 – The Gift of Righteousness Far Surpasses the Trespass
In the same way that the world inherited sin on account of Adam, those who believe in Jesus inherit righteousness in the same matter. This is called the Law of Substitution. Paul stresses the importance of this principal in today's passage of scripture by mentioning it five times. Adam brought things from good to bad and Jesus brought things from bad to good, if one is true than the other is true as well. Adam may have brought destruction upon humankind, but Christ brought upon humanity righteousness and grace for everyone who calls upon his name and accepts this free gift.
In life, it is easy to downplay great success and victories by focusing on negative circumstances. We focus on the fall and what Adam did to creation in the garden by disobeying God. However the Apostle Paul reminds us that the result of what Christ accomplished on the cross far surpasses the trespass. Christ's sacrifice and payment for sin was so extravagant that it completely overshadowed the transgression in every way imaginable. The Amplified Bible puts it this way, "But God's free gift is not at all to be compared to the trespass..." ( Romans 5:15 Amp ) The gift couldn't even be measured against the trespass because there was no basis for comparison. The gift overshadowed, outweighed, overcame and outshined it in every way imaginable. One drop of Jesus' blood would have been sufficient to pay the price, but instead it flowed out for us. And so did his love, compassion and grace.
Although we didn't deserve it, this grace benefited all of us. Jesus has completely undone what Adam did. Our sins have been completely paid for and completely forgiven. ( Romans 6:10, I Peter 3:18, Hebrews 10:18 ) As born again believers, we have also been redeemed from the curse of the Law ( Galatians 3:13-14, Romans 3:21-26 ) and are holy and righteous in God's eyes based solely upon Jesus' complete victory on the cross ( Romans 3:22 ). Today I am so thankful for Jesus' extravagant gift, I am so thankful to know that what he did far surpassed the original trespass and that his gift is free and available for everyone who chooses to believe in him.
Romans 12:4-5 - In Christ We Form One Body
In Christ Jesus we were set apart to belong to God. No longer a part of this world we have been made sons and daughters through Christ and called into a royal priesthood. In the same way, we belong to the body of Christ which is the church. Although the sum total makes up many members we are joined together in such a way that makes us one body. We belong to each other in unity and service to bring the operation of God's kingdom in this world.
Each one of us has been given a special gifting and called to a specific purpose. But on our own we will not accomplish much. Joining together with other believers and utilizing their gifting is what brings meaning and fullness to the body of Christ.
A great example of this is our physical bodies. It has many organs and parts but each part cannot exist on its own. Being a part of the body is what enables the various parts to operate within their function. A heart pumps blood throughout the body, the brain processes, thinks and gives instruction, the skeletal system supports the entire operation and our muscles are what enable us to move about. They all work together to create a living human being capable of amazing things. When there is a problem in any of these parts, then it affects the entire system and as a result the whole body suffers.
The same is true within the body of Christ. We all have different functions, gifting and strengths, but they complement other parts of the body. When operating as God designed us, we are blessing the entire body. When we don't operate the way we were designed, then the body suffers. We are mutually dependent on one another and the makeup of the whole body far outweighs the sum of the individual parts.
Each one of us should consider this and operate as God has called us. There are many parts to the body of Christ and many roles. Not all are teachers, not all are pastors but all have a place. The fact that some roles are not visible within the body of Christ does not mean they are less important. Actually the opposite is true, these gifts are absolutely necessary to the body and hold special honor by God. "While our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" ( I Corinthians 12:24-27 ).
The great thing about this is each one of us can play to our strengths and the within the gifting that the Lord has given us. This is why we need to renew our minds and prove the will of God for our lives ( Romans 12:2 ). This is how we know what we are called to be. Each part is necessary and each part blesses the body of Christ. We are called to belong to each other.
Today may you understand how you have blessed the body by being called and set apart for a specific use. By faith may you continue to operate in that calling, amen.
Romans 15:25-28 - Sharing Material Blessing with the Church in Jerusalem
This is a wonderful testament to the heart of God's people. Paul is sharing a marvelous account of believers who came together to provide relief for their brothers and sisters in Christ who were struggling. The Jews in Jerusalem where living in extreme poverty. Because of their confession of Christ they had been thrown out of the synagogue and subsequently lost all connections with families, communities and ways to make a living. As believers they faced extreme persecution and extreme poverty living in Jerusalem, the center of Jewish life.
As the result, the Gentile churches that were growing around Asia heard of their distress and took it upon themselves to collect an offering to be sent as relief for these believers. We read about this preparation and Paul's instruction to the churches in I Corinthians 16 & II Corinthians 8 & 9. This is where we get wonderful truths about giving. The Gentile churches pioneered the heart of giving cheerfully when needs arose.
After they had collected the offering they had tasked Paul and his companions to deliver the gift to the believers there. Paul is sharing his plans of returning to Jerusalem to deliver their gift and then journeying on to Rome to visit this growing church. He reminds us of a wonderful truth in the middle of these verses. The Gentile church was overjoyed to share with the poor in Jerusalem because they had been blessed by the gospel that Jews had shared with them. They had benefited from their spiritual blessings and so it seemed right that they would also share with these people their material blessings. This act was completely voluntary on the part of the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. They were overjoyed and willing to give what they had because the gospel they received had changed their lives. So they gave out of a grateful and thankful heart. Paul wrote to these churches and told them, "This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God" ( II Corinthians 9:12 ).
What a marvelous truth to know that our gifts express thankfulness to God for what He has done in sending Jesus. It is another way for us to praise him and show our gratitude to him. These churches were great examples in giving with a pure heart. I am sure as the church in Rome read these words of Paul they were encouraged by the faith of other believers. I am sure they were also excited at the prospect of Paul's visit and encouraged in the truth of this letter. Today, I am thankful that Jews shared in their spiritual blessings so that the world could have the good news of Jesus Christ. Today, I pray that this gospel changes your heart and you dwell in gratefulness and thankfulness to God for what he has done, amen!
