Romans 1:23 - Modern Day Idols

"and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles." ( Romans 1:23 )

It's a sad state when we will exchange the glory of God for something created. Paul tells us that since the beginning of time we have an intuitive knowledge of God. He is written on our hearts and He has made himself known unto us. ( Romans 1:19 ) Because we have freedom of choice in the matter, unfortunately the revelation of God is not always received. When that happens then we fill that God shaped hole with everything but what it was designed to be filled with... God himself.

It is easy to look at this and think that we would never make and worship idols such as civilizations of the past did. However with our progression as a society so our progression of idols. Ours are just as prevalent but more disguised and unrecognizable as idols. Work, money, material possessions, busyness... just about anything and everything that we exalt above God is the modern day idol.

Since the truth of God is written on our hearts, our beings crave connection with Him. If we ignore that, then we shut our hearts and minds to knowing Him relationally. Without the spirit connection, then the best we can do to fill that yearning is with perverted, contaminated and perishable representations of it.

Jesus said in John 10:10, "...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." Knowing Jesus fills that hunger inside of us for connection with God. Jesus promises abundant life, life overflowing. When you know Jesus , then you know the Father as well. Jesus said in John 14, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." ( John 14:9 )

Today, I pray that you may experience Jesus and by this know the Father as well. May you fill your God-shaped hole with the real deal and find unspeakable joy in the process. May you cast off those modern day idols and the things that hold you in chains and run towards Jesus who will perfect your faith!
