“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess” ( Hebrews 4:14 )

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the pinnacle of history. The fate of mankind hinged on the this one event. And as Jesus was raised from the dead he ascended through the heavens past every authority and spiritual force in existence. Nothing they could do stopped the ascension of our Savior and they watched in horror as life defeated death once for all.

Now Jesus is at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us. He is our personal advocate and the best defense attorney in the universe. Because this is a past event we hold firmly and confidently to this profession of faith in Christ, knowing that He lives to guarantee our lives as well.

Couple this amazing truth with the previous verses and you will understand the depth of God’s love toward us. God knows us, He sees the inmost thoughts we possess. In fact verse 13 says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” ( Hebrews 4:13 ). And yet in the very next verse it says, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess” ( Hebrews 4:14 ). Whenever you see therefore in the scriptures, you must pause and ask “what it is there for?” Nothing concerning our thoughts and actions surprise God. He sees and knows everything about us, but instead of pronouncing judgment we are instructed to hold firmly to our confession of faith in Christ. Grace and mercy abound as we are reminded that Jesus has ascended into heaven and it currently making intercession for us and on our behalf.

Jesus rushed to make our defense and His blood washed us clean of every offense. Paul said in Romans 5, “For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” ( Romans 5:10 ). God sent His only son for us when we were His enemies, now that we are redeemed and call beloved, how much more are we loved, forgiven and restored because of it? This is why we are reminded to hold firmly to our profession of faith, understanding that Jesus lives to intercede for us, knowing the most intimate details about us so he can accurately and completely uphold our defense.

Just as the pinnacle of history was Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, our entire hope in life is still dependent on this significant event. If we hold firmly until the end this confession of faith, remembering that Jesus is our High Priest then we will have confidence and boldness to approach God on the basis of this faith ( Hebrews 4:16 ). This is truly an amazing truth understanding the role that Jesus plays as our Savior and High Priest and letting this truth rewrite how we approach and relate to God.
